Attorney Bio

JANET E. HONG

Janet Hong has a wealth of experience in criminal defense, having conducted over 40 trials in New York and California, including several homicides.  Janet is a California State Bar Certified Criminal Law Specialist and has drafted questions for the California State Bar Criminal Specialist examination.  She is an adjunct lecturer for the Criminal Justice Clinic at UC Irvine Law School where she trains and advises law students representing clients in misdemeanor cases.   As a member of the federal bar panel, she represents indigent defendants under the Criminal Justice Act.  She has expanded her practice representing plaintiffs in civil rights cases and is a member of the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles (CAALA).  Her unique background in criminal and civil matters, in government and private practice, and in the New York, California, and Federal courts, has made her into an advocate that not only commands a courtroom but can also win a case on paper.

At Columbia University, Janet played Division I basketball for the Columbia Women’s Basketball Team.  Inspired by the Ethnic Studies movement at her school, she majored in African American Studies.  She graduated from Columbia magna cum laude.  At USC Law School, she served as the President of the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association, competed in the Hale Moot Court Honors Program, and worked with inmates in the Post-Conviction Justice Clinic.

Giving back to the community is a big priority for Janet.  She regularly volunteers as a judge for local high school and college mock trial competitions.   She is a founding board member of The K.W. Lee Center for Leadership, a youth leadership program in Koreatown that trains high school and college students in the art of community organizing. The Center is named after civil rights activist and journalist Kyung Won Lee, whose investigative articles on the 1973 murder conviction of immigrant Chol Soo Lee led to a new trial, acquittal, and release of Chol Soo from San Quentin’s Death Row.

Janet has been recognized as a SuperLawyer in criminal defense for the past five consecutive years, a distinction given to the top 5% of attorneys in the state.  She has been named by The Daily Journal as one of the Top 100 Women Lawyers in California.  Janet is a lifetime member of the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles and currently serves as its 103rd President.

Janet is a three-time IronWoman Finisher.  She has traveled to all seven continents, most recently to Antarctica.

Client Testimonials

“Not Guilty” “My younger brother was charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon. Because of his prior convictions, he was facing 14 years in state prison. The case was going to trial and we weren’t happy with his lawyer at the time. Then Janet took over for the trial. From day one she was knowledgeable, professional, and knew how to work the courtroom. I was there for the entire trial. I watched her work the jury and persuade the judge to rule in her favor on different issues that came up. I was most impressed by her ability to rip apart the witnesses and police officers who completely lied on the stand. Apparently, so was the jury – they voted NOT GUILTY and my brother was ACQUITTED of all charges. Janet literally saved 14 years of his life. If you want to fight your case all the way to trial, there is no one better.”

“My Appreciation for Janet” “When I disobeyed the law and became a first-time offender, I was extremely embarrassed and full of anxiety. It wasn’t until I was referred to Janet Hong, that I was able to ease my mind and find solace. The District Attorney for my case used the judicial system towards his advantage and tried to punish me with maximum penalties. My ignorance could have cost me much more money and time with a Public Defender or one of those random solicitors. Janet was very knowledgeable, helpful, and comforting towards all of my inquiries. At times, I felt that I was becoming bothersome since I contacted her every time I went to court; however, no matter how busy she was, Janet made the time to guide me through everything to the best of her abilities. I will always be grateful for her help during my time of crisis and turmoil.”
-Former client

“Excellent Trial Attorney” “Janet Hong is an excellent attorney I’m grateful she came on board when I wanted to take my case to trial for a DUI I got in Riverside County. The first day i met Janet to consult my case she made me feel comfortable and gave me reassurance. She mentioned trials is what she loves to do and now I know why. She’s very knowledgable, professional, skilled and is fierce in a courtroom. I Could have not asked for a better attorney to represent me throughout this process.”
-Former client

“Thanks Ms. Hong” “I am a minor, I was arrested with possession of narcotics and sales, i was kicked out of the district. When Ms Hong went to my hearing she noticed that there was not enough evidence for me to get charged with sales, therefore i was only being charged with possession of narcotics, i had court and i only ended up doing informal probation, she also helped me on getting my charges dismissed, and now i am off probation and waiting to get back to regular high school !! I would highly recommend Ms Hong to any person that has a juvenile case.”
-Former client

“Highly Recommended” “When my brother got in trouble here in New York, I consulted with Janet Hong. She was so helpful in explaining things to me and my parents, who were not fluent in English. She was patient, knowledgeable, and spent as much time as we needed to answer all our questions. Not only does she genuinely care about her clients, she fights hard for them. And don’t be fooled by her smile, she is a BEAST in the courtroom. She has the smarts and fiery personality that you want in a lawyer if you find yourself in deep sh*t. Thank you Janet Hong for helping my family through a very difficult time.”
-Former client

“Great and Honest” “Janet hong has great communication. She is very thorough and makes sure you understand what is happening with your case. I appreciate that a lot about her. Not only is she great at communicating but she makes sure you get documents, info etc to her in a timely manner. She never swings anything on a person at the last minute. If she can’t reach you she tries every form of contact until she can. You know she’s serious about her work and has your best interest in mind. In my case I needed to finish a certain program in order for my case to be dismissed. Even though she is not located in the same county as I am she did great research to find me a place in my county where I could get the program done. When I had court dates she would represent me and get back to me with the results of the day very promptly, if not the same day then the very next morning. She’s wonderful and I couldn’t have asked for a better lawyer. Hopefully I won’t ever need to but if I ever find myself needing a lawyer again she will be my number one choice always!”

“Thank You, Janet!” “Janet traveled to Sacramento for every one of my husband’s court hearings, I think that alone speaks volumes. After terminating his previous attorney, my husband was referred to Janet through a mutual friend. We were both very unsure of what to expect as we were extremely disappointed with his previous representation, but Janet did everything possible to make sure my husband was given the best deal. We know that this was the best possible outcome given the circumstances and appreciate Janet’s hard work throughout my husband’s case. Janet was always honest in answering our questions. She was also very prompt in regards to communication. She really helped us throughout such a difficult period in our lives and if we ever needed legal advice or representation we would retain her again, no questions asked.”
